Blog #1: Hola Kiddos

Hi, my name is Megan Breckinridge and I'm a sophomore here at Ship. My major is Clinical Psychology with a minor in Sociology. The reason I decided to take this class was because I love to read and analyze books. I thought this would be a nice break from reading boring textbooks. I'm hoping that I can try not to be so shy in this class and voice my opinions about the books we are going to read. I'm really friendly and love to help people develop their ideas, write papers, and edit them. So if you ever need help with an assignment or paper (in this class or another), just let me know and I would be more than happy to help. My email is in the 'About Me' section if you need to contact me.
The last book I read was The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's an amazing book that you should definitely check out at some point. (I've read it four times already). I'm interested in all types of "popular culture". Reading (all types of books, news, short stories, etc.), music, movies, tv, etc. I also love to play video games, mainly Minecraft, Black Ops, Gears of War, Mario Cart, and Left For Dead. I'm on the computer CONSTANTLY! It definitely consumes too much of my time, but I try to get out in the real world every once and a while. I'm also a fan of really bad horror movies because I find them hilarious. So if you're ever looking for a good laugh at bad acting, let me know and I'll suggest a few flicks that shouldn't of made it onto DVD.
In the past, I always dreaded summer reading assignments since I found most of the books too long or boring. But when I actually sat down and began to read them, there were a bunch that were worth while. Classics may not be my favorite, but most of them present interesting facts and questions about society at the time. One of my favorite books that I ever read in an English class was Fahrenheit 451 (as you can tell by the quote from it in my heading). I was so excited to see that we were going to read it for this class, so I'm hoping it is as good as I remember.
While I only mentioned 'Classics' as being apart of literature, I believe that all books, short stories, poems, etc., are all literature. It doesn't matter if you like it or hate it, each author wrote their pieces of history with what they want to convey to readers in mind. Even the creepy romance novels have a purpose. It all depends on your own perspective and how you interpret what you're reading. If you become involved with a book instead of just simply scanning over the words, you will begin to understand more about the author. To me, learning about the author or the characters in books is far more interesting than the actual story.
I hope everyone had an awesome summer and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.
